Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Democrat of New York, came under fire Sunday after falsely claiming on social media that 50,000 attendees at a colonial election festival in Puerto Rico were demonstrating in favor of the “anti-Trump and anti-corruption Alliance movement.” .
“Eyes on Puerto Rico: tonight, Puerto Ricans gathered the second largest political demonstration of this ENTIRE cycle, only behind Harris’ 75,000-person Ellipse speech,” AOC wrote in a post on They demonstrated for the anti-Trump movement, anti-corruption Alliance movement & @juandalmauPR Political earthquake.”
The representative was referring to a festival that seemed to attract more people than Vice President Harris’ speech last week on the Ellipse, next to the White House, but the publication did not tell the whole story.
In fact, critics accused AOC of lying and added a community note to the social media post.

“The demonstration represented is the Festival of Hope, organized by the anti-colonial parties of the Citizen Victory Movement (MVC) and the Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) before the next colonial elections,” the note said. “It had nothing to do with any of the major parties in the United States.”
Several X users accused AOC of lying and misleading people, and one even accused her of using Puerto Rico for her own political goals.

In a follow-up post about X, AOC attempted to clarify her comments.
“I didn’t mention Kamala and said it’s about Anti-Corruption Alliance,” he wrote. “To build a coalition, it is relevant to note that Jenniffer González, of the PNP, presented Latinos for Trump and campaigned with fear tactics about the Dalmau cut. [Social] Security when she is in power is reduced through membership in the Republican Party.”
Still, users continue to criticize AOC for her post that racked up more than 5.7 million views.

Billionaire Elon Musk, owner of X, also weighed in on his post, simply writing “lol.”
AOC and Musk have feuded over various issues for at least the past two years.
In a case that occurred in September 2023, AOC criticized Musk on social media after he said that she is “not that smart.”
AOC had mocked House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., seizing on a social media meme about “girl math,” where people use bad math to justify spending habits, saying, “Math kids need 15 tries to count the votes correctly. become president and then shut down the government 9 months later.”

In response, conservative influencer Ashley St. Clair shared a clip of AOC in which she argued that the number of legal immigrants who traveled to Ellis Island, New York, around the turn of the century “far eclipsed what we’re seeing now” in terms of the current migration crisis.
“Female math says that immigrants arriving legally through Ellis Island are the same as 3 million undocumented immigrants crossing our border and it costs New York $1,000,000,000 to house the immigrants for free in hotels,” St. Clair said.
Musk chimed in and commented, “He’s just not that smart.”

The insult caught the attention of AOC, who responded with a list of her accomplishments and a bitter farewell to X’s owner.
“I wasn’t born rich and became the youngest woman in American history to be elected to Congress. I went on to investigate Cohen, author the largest FEMA funeral assistance program in history, and direct [the] creation of a US Climate Corps to create tens of thousands of new jobs,” he responded. “Stay angry.”
